Leaves have asymmetrical bases and there are three main veins. The leaf margin is serrated in the upper two-thirds. The yellow fruit ripens in late summer to autumn and is relished by birds and monkeys.

The trunk of Celtis africana is easy to distinguish by its smooth, pale grey to white bark. It may be loosely peeling in old trees and sometimes has horizontal ridges.
